Voltaren® Topical Gel (Topical)
Voltaren® Topical Gel is a prescription medication for the treatment of. It contains diclofenac diethylammonium (DDA) as an inactive ingredient. This product is not indicated for use by women. Voltaren® Topical Gel contains the active ingredient diclofenac diethylamine (DDA), which is a weak inhibitor of gastric and pancreatic lipases. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of the enzymes responsible for the hydrolysis of DDA, thereby preventing the formation of DDA. The drug is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). This is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) primarily used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain associated with various conditions, including arthritis, menstrual pain, headache, menstrual migraine, toothaches, and menstrual pain. The active ingredient in Voltaren® Topical Gel is diclofenac diethylamine (DDA), which is a weak inhibitor of cyclooxygenase (COX), a natural compound that regulates the body's response to injury, illness, or infection. DDA inhibits the production of prostaglandins and thereby, inactivate prostaglandin E2. This leads to the production of prostaglandin E2 and subsequent pain, inflammation, and swelling. The product is only available in a topical form and requires application to the skin.
Voltaren® Topical Gel side effects are uncommon and tend to occur in less than 1% of users. Common side effects include gastrointestinal distress, skin irritation, headache, or flushing, among others. If these effects occur, contact a healthcare professional immediately.
In rare cases, Voltaren® Topical Gel has been associated with cardiovascular side effects such as: heart attack, stroke, or transient ischemic attack (TIA), which may be fatal. In these instances, the drug is not recommended for use by pregnant women or women who are planning to become pregnant. The drug is also not recommended for use in children under 16 years of age.
Voltaren® Topical Gel should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. There is no information on safety for use by pregnant women or women of childbearing potential. The safety of Voltaren® Topical Gel is uncertain, and the drug has not been studied in pregnant women. If the potential benefits outweigh the risks, consult your healthcare professional before use.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including diclofenac (Voltaren, Voltaren Emulgel, Diclofenac sodium), celecoxib (Celebrex, Celebrex Emulgel, Diclofenac sodium), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Aleve, Naprosyn Emulgel, Naproxen sodium) have been studied extensively for their cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and immunomodulatory effects. However, in the last few decades there has been a growing interest in the development of non-selective NSAIDs, including diclofenac and celecoxib.
NSAIDs exert their anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX and COX-1), including prostaglandins (PG) (prostacyclin) and (in the case of prostaglandin E2) (see section 2). Although diclofenac is one of the most widely used NSAIDs, diclofenac sodium and celecoxib are widely used by the elderly. However, the safety and efficacy of these drugs have not been adequately studied in the elderly population.
To understand the safety and efficacy of non-selective NSAIDs, it is necessary to analyze the safety profile of the most commonly used NSAIDs. This review article, focusing on diclofenac, shows the relationship between cardiovascular risks and drug interactions.
Diclofenac is a selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, with the pharmacologic activity of blocking prostaglandin formation from the COX isoform of cyclooxygenase (COX-1). COX-1 is found in the liver, intestines and other sites of synthesis in the gastrointestinal tract. As a result of inhibition of COX-1, prostaglandins increase through inhibition of the COX-2 isoform of the enzyme, resulting in the production of prostacyclin. These prostacyclins are potent analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents and are commonly used for the treatment of inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract (for example, in peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer).
Naproxen sodium, on the other hand, is an oral NSAID with a selective COX-2 inhibitor and a nonselective COX-2 inhibitor. It is also a prodrug with a low degree of COX-2 inhibition. The pharmacologic activity of naproxen sodium is reduced by the presence of prostacyclin and by a reduction of prostaglandin synthesis. The low level of prostacyclin is responsible for the low analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of naproxen sodium.
Diclofenac is a non-selective NSAID with a different mechanism of action, with the pharmacologic activity of diclofenac being a COX-2 inhibitor. The mechanism of action of naproxen sodium is based on the inhibition of COX-1, the prostacyclin metabolite which in turn is metabolized by the enzyme COX-2. The COX-2 is a specific inhibitor of the enzyme COX-1 and COX-2, which are inhibited by the presence of prostacyclin. Diclofenac and celecoxib are the most frequently used NSAIDs for the treatment of pain. Diclofenac is a non-selective NSAID with a COX-2 inhibitor, with a low degree of COX-2 inhibition. The pharmacologic activity of diclofenac sodium is decreased by the presence of prostacyclin and by the reduction of prostaglandin synthesis. The low level of prostacyclin is responsible for the low analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of diclofenac sodium.
Naproxen sodium is a non-selective NSAID with a COX-2 inhibitor, with a low degree of COX-2 inhibition. It is a prodrug with a COX-2 inhibitor, with a low degree of COX-2 inhibition. Diclofenac sodium is a prodrug with a COX-2 inhibitor, with a low degree of COX-2 inhibition.
